What Does It Mean To Be An Anarchist?

Anarchism is a political philosophy which advocates the removal of the State and the establishment of a society without governmental authority.

  • Traditional anarchists do not favor socialism (because it requires a state), reject all authority (both business & government) and advocate the formation of collectives ( small democratically run communes).
  • A majority of anarchists believe in a peaceful means of achieving an anarchist system (ie: not voting in an election and other peaceful protesting means).
  • A minority of anarchists support violence as a means of achieving their cause (ie: a few anarchist groups have been labeled "terrorist organizations").

What Does It Mean To Be A Socialist?

Socialism: An economic and political system in which private property is abolished and the means of production (i.e., capital and land) are collectively owned and operated by the community as a whole in order to advance the interests of all. A socialist society is envisioned as being characterized by the dictatorship of the proletariat; the existence of a high degree of cooperation and equality; and the absence of discrimination, poverty, exploitation, and war. With the non-existence of private ownership, the private profit motive is eliminated from economic life. Consequently, market forces do not play a role in organizing the process of production. Instead, large-scale government planning is employed to ensure the harmonious operation of the process of production. (In Marxist ideology, socialism is considered an intermediate stage in the inevitable transformation of capitalism into communism.)

Socialism seeks to prioritize human welfare over other goals, such as profit and wealth accumulation by elites; it views increased redistribution of wealth as vital to securing greater freedom and happiness for the bulk of the people, and deplores the devastating effects of gross inequality on society in terms of increased crime, mental illness, unhappiness and lack of life chances.

What Does It Mean To Be A Communist or Marxist?

Communism is a socioeconomic structure that promotes the establishment of a classless, stateless society based on common ownership of the means of production (machines, tools, plant and equipment, infrastructure,...)

Source: Wikipedia

Communism is an economic and political system based on the principle "From each according to their ability, to each according to their need." It stresses that the control of the means of producing economic goods in a society should reside in the hands of those who invest their labor for production. In its ideal form, social classes cease to exist, there is no coercive governmental structures, and everyone lives in abundance without supervision from a ruling class. Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels popularized this theory in their 1848 Communist Manifesto.
