Gay Rights
The gay rights movement seeks to elevate
homosexuality to the same level of social and political
respectability as heterosexual relationships.
With arguments against homosexuality largely dispelled,
the gay rights movement seeks to remove the stigma of sexual
perversion from homosexuality by arguing that either,
- Homosexuality
is an immutable trait, and discriminating against immutable
traits is wrong (cf. race discrimination),
or,
- Homosexuality,
if not immutable, is highly correlated with personality,
and discriminating against such deeply
rooted notions of self is wrong,
as well (cf. religious intolerance).
50%
of those asked favored legal recognition of same-sex
unions, either as marriages or civil unions or partnerships.
44% felt same-sex couples should have no legal recognition,
with 6% unsure. (Polling
Report)

LGBT Social Movements
Lesbian, gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) social
movements share related goals of social acceptance of homosexuality,
bisexuality, or transgenderism. LGBT refers to lesbian,
gay, bisexual and transgender people, and their movements
include the Gay and Lesbian Rights Movement, Gay Liberation,
lesbian feminism, the queer movement and transgender activism.
As with other social movements, there is also conflict
within and between LGBT movements, especially about strategies
for change and debates over exactly who comprises the constituency
that these movements represent.

is a divisive political issue in the United States and

became a prominent one in U.S. politics in the 1990s.
